Post subject: AZ Emissions- Need your help

Lets start off with the fact that we all hate emissions! With that out of the way I need to figure out my problem so I can pass and register my E34. I know my:

coils= good
spark plugs= good
chip/ ecu= Stock
O2 sensor= good/ just replaced after 2nd fail
fuel filter= good/ just replaced after 2nd fail
air filter= good
oil change= good/ just replaced after 2nd fail
cats= Had one replaced after 1st fail, since one was chattering (they are not OEM and about 4-5yrs old). The other is still on and seems ok as its not making noise.
Drive the crap out of it before testing= yes

Heres my test results:
Test1: (on this test I was the first up)
HC- 1.93 (limit 1.00) Fail
CO- 11.90 (limit 12.00) Pass
NOX- 3.30 (limit 2.50) Fail

Test2: (on this test I had to wait for 15minutes)
HC- 1.88 Fail
CO- 19.64 Fail
NOX- 2.77 Fail

Test3: (on this test I had to wait 5minutes)
HC- 1.89 Fail
CO- 14.46 Fail
NOX- 2.42 Pass

Any Advise, ideas? My car runs perfect and I dont see any other issues...could performance pulleys, exhaust effect the test??? Thanks.

Your readings would help me out more if you had a o2 reading (oxygen) your results tell me its running rich.. HC's=pure unburned fuel Co=partially burned fuel which may indicate lean or rich but HC's are high so im leaning toward rich. NOx is created in the combustion chamber at 2500F. your catalyst is not cleaning up as good as possible your car should have gone into closed loop a long time in this process which should have cleaned it all up... theres no direct answer for this it could as simple as a faulty coolant temp sensor reading to your DME and not allowing your car to go into closed loop. or this could a missfire if you have o2 (oxygen) readings a missfire will have alot of oxygen and alot of HC's... hope any of this helps. Shocked

btw pully's should not affect emissions but, if you tampered with the catalyst such as high flow cats can cause you to FAIL emissions... but a aftermarket muffler or cat back should not. hope this helps dude emissions are simply GAY.

Thanks Euro6. Someone on BFC said it could be a leaky injector possibly since it does show that its running a little rich. Also I think if I got my other cat replaced then I should be ok on the exhaust gases.

Half a gallon of denatured alcohol in the tank with about 5 gallons of prem. unleaded. Did it with many old cars, passed with flying colors every time.

After emissions top off tank with fuel, good to go.

HMM--you are not throwing any codes?? I just got the e36 passed thru in June--all they did was hook it up via the OBD port and it passed--nothing else to do---

Had to do this very thing on the autocross Miata, but it was 1 gallon of denatured alcohol with about 3 gallons left in the tank. Then filled it up, and no problems. Cool

As for the plug-in test, that is for OBD2 cars. This car has to be OBD1 and need the sniffer test. Agreed, emissions testing SUCKS !!! Evil or Very Mad

Goto home depot or lowes. It used to be like 13-14 a gallon, been a while since I got it.

I would just drop it off to Bavarian Motors www.phoenixbmwmini.com/ , and have Andrew tune it get it passed and then tune it for the street. I have to go through this every time I need emissions done. Cost about 200 bucks for Andrew to get it to pass.

Yeah, I think it was even cheaper than that at Walmart. Then again, as suggested, if Andrew can tune it to pass and diagnose the problem properly, AND you can afford it, it might save you troubles in a couple more years?

Fuk....My e30 just failed twice.

It passed with flying colors in January with OBDII exhaust, since then I upgraded the exhaust cam, headers, and cheap Magnaflow cat. Thing failed horribly.

HC- 3.16
CO- 15.xx
NOX-Pass (barely)

LOL. I added Seafoam in the gas, and 1qt of Denatured alki:

HC-1.8x
CO-18.xx
NOX-pass

Ok guys this past week I got a new cat and replaced my injector seals, so basically I have new O2 sensor, new cats, new spark plugs and the injectors look good and same with the ignition coils. I even put a gallon of denatured alcohol but still FAILED but only one.

HC- .87 (pass)
CO- 12.37 (fail, limit 12)
NOX- 1.76 (pass)

What is my problem, I am starting to rip the hairs out of my head because the state is making me pay and pay. Thanks.
