Hi,

I am beginning to think my car is aging out way too fast now and its maybe time to retire her (but i have glimmer of hope), speaking of the 97 540i with 192k miles (little venting for intro).

Yesterday driving on a congested avenue right before the stop light car just died. As i sat there puzzled, a slight smoke came out of the engine compartment area as well. Naturally i tried cranking the car but to no prevail and did not start, sorry fellow drivers had to jam you up pretty good as i blocked the lane.

Luckily 2 volunteers offered to push the car out of the road to the nearest plaza, gratefully appreciative i was since i had my kid in the back as well, frantically wondering what was happening.

I had my generic scanner with me and ran codes as i waited patiently for the tow truck to arrive. Well there was whole bunch of them to begin.

Here they are:
P0201-P0208 (Injector Circuit Malfunction) all 8 of them.
P0100 - MAF related it seems, in connection with the top ones i assume
P0443 - Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit.

For a week i have been driving with the knock sensors popping up randomly as well.

When i got home I pulled the fuel line to the injectors and tried cranking the engine and no fuel was coming out.

That is as far as i got to it. I did a tad of research, fuel pump relay, fuel filter (replaced 30-40k ago) fuel pump as well. I am leaning toward the fuel pump (no record of it being serviced) as I doubt the relay is bad but i will try and test it.

Car cranks, its not overheated. Puzzling indeed. Anyone been through a similar ordeal, thanks.

The other codes that were stored were the knock sensors.

In panic mode I decided to search through the infinite world of the internet for as I was sure someone was nearly in my boots once in their lifetime, lol.

While on various bimmerforums I read and read different topics and it seems for different people was a different reason.

Today i took the battery to be tested just in case, fairly new battery. The guy at the store told me it needs to be charged to be properly tested. Now I am thinking did the alternator drain the battery and that why the car died, i guess its a small start ahead.

I have a spare alternator from my treasure hunts to the junkyards i will slap it on while i wait on the results for the battery and take it from there.

Thanks for the advices so far, i may give one of those references a call see what they say.

Update:

While waiting on the battery to charge, i replaced the alternator and for insurance i replaced the fuel pump. I put the battery on and car cranks, to no relief it wont start. Now I am pissed....

I looked at fuses in the rear in the glove box, all OK. started searching online, one suggestion was to check the fuses and relays in the engine bay by the passenger side. I get there and before i bothered to check relays i noticed in a black square box with 4 fuses, 3- 30 and 1- 20 labeled motor sicherungen (insurance) there was a blown 30 fuse. I replaced it crossed my fingers and cranked the car and it started up.

Drove the car around a bit and the check engine light came on, pulled up codes P1384 and 1385 - knock sensors.


Is the car drivable with the knock sensors on, presumably bad?

3/21 Update:

Tore up engine and replaced knock sensors, also came across a loose spark plug, replaced CCV while at it. haven't heard the engine this quiet since i bought the car. So far so good.
