Can someone loan me BMW Tool 11 2 50? It is the water pump/mechanic fan holder so I can remove the nut that holds the fan on. Trying to replace the belts on my E39 M5.

I have one (not BMW brand but it's the same thing), but it is currently loaned out. Let me see if I can get it back by tomorrow. How soon do you need it?

i need to make a FAQ on this one.

you dont need a counter-hold tool. if you have a 32mm wrench and a hammer then youre set.

place the wrench in a vertical position on the fan nut and strike the end of the wrench in a downward direction to "shock" the nut loose. do not strike it from the side. it also helps to hold the wrench with your non-hammer hand and apply light pressure in the clockwise direction.

works every time and is quick and easy.

an additional note when installing the fan, dont tighten with the wrench. just spin it on and youre done. heed my words.

Yada yada. To your original point: PM me if you don't like shear stress and want to use the tool.

I have read about the brute force method on M5board. Problem is the car is from back east and the nut is corroded on there pretty good. I have been spraying it with WD40 everyday, hoping to penetrate the threads with no luck. I have a long 32mm wrench and engineers hammer but haven't had any luck in loosening it. Hoping to borrow the tool to do it properly

stress as in psychological stress or tensile shear strength stress? if its the latter you are concerned about, i have no empirical data to convince you that it wont damage anything other than my experience doing it hundreds if not thousands of times with no ill effects.

you can either waste time tracking down a tool that is difficult to use and only has one use, or get your belts done now and enjoy a beer because you deserve it.

brute force is not whats needed. precise application of persuasive action is more like it. if its not working youre not hitting hard enough.

ive dealt with cars from the rust belt and yes they take a little more persuasion but they all give up in the end.

Am I the only one that doesn't remove the fan when doing belts? I just release the tension, carefully route the belt up and around the fan to remove and then reverse to re-install.

yes, thats the other option but i can do it faster by removing the fan. to each his own.
