Post subject: I'm back! 2005 E46

So last week, I finally found what I was looking for. Details as follows:

2005 330i
Slush-o-matic
Sapphire Black
Natural Brown interior (mint!!)
~140k miles

It has both sport and premium packages, and evidently 2005s came standard with Bluetooth and BMW Assist, so that's good I guess? The Bluetooth sucks, but the Harman/Kardon isn't too bad.

The interior is as perfect as I've ever seen. I'd swear the car was 2 years old, not 9. The exterior has a few imperfections: fog light is cracked and the bezel is missing, the RF fender has a little dent, the headlight covers are faded, and the front has a few rock chips and such. Oh well, it's not bad for the mileage.

Mechanically it's pretty good too, but needs a few things: new tires, front control arm bushings, probably other bushings, and a trans fluid change. The coolant level sensor seems to be kaput because the actual coolant level and entire cooling system are fine, but the light pops on intermittently.

I'll fix the little problems, un-Plasti-Dip the grille and wheels (they're chrome under the flat black, so I'll probably just paint them factory silver) and just drive it - it's a great daily. I picked up the OEM Aux input cable and promptly ignored their instructions on location... I wired it to the aux button panel with DSC and such in front of the shift lever - that's sort of visible in the second photo. Next will be a Homelink module (if you have a rolling code one for sale, I'll buy it), and that's probably it.

Long story short: I'm happy to be back in a proper car Smile

iPhone photos below. Don't hurt me.

Dent visible on the RF fender.

I love this interior.

Yup, still love it.

P.S. Anyone want the MR2?

Haha thanks Austin! And no, no one can have the interior. It's all mine.

Also discovered that the wrong size wiper blade is on the driver's side, and BOTH fogs/bezels are busted. Now I remember what it's like to have a BMW.

Also also threw some new tires on the front today to see if it was those causing the resonance, and it was. Now to replace the bushings that caused the tire wear in the first place.

Thanks! If there are any mods, they'll just be for increased reliability (e-fan, Stewart H2O pump, that sort of thing). Probably some sort of BBS wheels when I feel like it. It's a slushbox, so it just cruises to work and back at 28 mpg now and I'm loving it. No need to change much!

Nice car - love the interior color!

In terms of the maint/cooling system issues, you may want to research a bit on the Stewart water pump. Some folks on e46Fanatics have had problems with them and they havent been responsive on warranty issues.

But definitely look after the cooling system if you don't have records on that being done. Coolant light could be just a sensor, or maybe an improper bleed last time it was flushed. There are some threads on e46Fanatics about accessing the hidden OBC menu so you can monitor coolant temps and see that things are working correctly. The needle in top center can be a misleading at times.

The needle in the 12 o'clock position means anything from 75C to 113C. Dumbest thing ever. Anyway, haven't heard many problems about the Stewart pump but I will of course check up on things before buying. The cooling system and front suspension are priorities #1 and 2 at this mileage.

This was the thread I was referencing...
www.e46fanatics.com/fo...p?t=985201

TL;DR - some have had issues with the seal and once or twice an internal failure. May not be a huge issue, but I don't know that I'd pay 3x the cost of OE for the EMP pump. Especially since the DIY for swapping one out isnt too bad.

Also, perhaps consider the fuel system if you're gonna rely on this for a DD. New filter is always a good idea, and the pump only runs $120ish (BMAparts - discount code spece30) and can be swapped in 30 min without lifting the car up. That beats a tow and paying someone else to do it if it fails, which many tend to do at that mileage.

Yeah, the car has been serviced at Chapman for its whole life, so I need to call them and see what's been done and when. The PO had no paper records but did provide me the Carfax that actually shows every time it went in... once I see Chapman release the service records I'll be a little more comfortable. Right now I am tackling what I KNOW it needs.

Good luck getting them to give you the records. A friend bought an E39 530i that had been dealer serviced since new at the same dealer and they wouldn't even give the records to the original owner for him. Hopefully you don't have that issue!

Nice pickup. Looks nice. I was kinda underwhelmed when I saw the first photo, but then I saw the inside. Nice! Needs at least three more pedals though.

I guess I'm not surprised the dealers aren't too cooperative about that. We'll see.

Thanks for the Kohler stamp of approval. I've never seen that on any car new enough to have OBDII. I wish it had three pedals too, but meh.

Wait, three MORE pedals? What is that witchcraft? Wink

Were you on the 101 at Scottsdale/McClintok last night around 8:30-9:00? I saw a black E46 with what looked like Black wheels on it. I was in my car with the ZHP plates if that was you.

That was me. I thought that car looked familiar. Gave you a beep beep as I exited then saw your car again at Four Peaks a half hour or so later.

Now I know I need me some CHs Smile your car looks good. My girlfriend agrees and says I should get clear marker lights.

Thanks! My E39 had "NO E30" plates. Was there even a non-M cinnamon interior for the E46? If so, I want it too.
