Looks like the paint cleaned up nicely.

You have quite a collection.

But damn dude, the AC S.U.C.K.S. on those early 5ers and you live in AZ. I'm surprised you don't want a more comfortable daily driver for summer.

This car isn't my daily driver.

This one is:

Yes, the AC does suck in these cars. It's essentially the system from the Bavaria, which sucked too.

Here's another picture of the 530i:

Today, I decided to finally remove the spacers on top of the strut mounts. Seemed like an easy job, but it isn't so much unless you remove the strut. I really didn't want to do that, but I couldn't get it to drop enough to get the spacer to clear the hat let alone get it off of the giant studs. Some of the coupe guys suggest compressing the spring and undoing the sway bar link from the control arm. I undid the sway bar link, but the radius rod wouldn't let the assembly drop enough. After discovering this was going to be more involved than I wanted to deal with for what I considered little gain, I was going to put it back together. Then a stud fell out. Damn. I knocked the rest of the studs out and that gave me the clearance to slide the spacers out.

It wasn't a big deal since there was an unanswered question. What was I going to do with the extra length of the studs. Surely, the hood wouldn't close over the top of them. Fortunately, I had a spare set of complete front strut housings from a 635CSi (same as M535i - spindle is larger), so they had the shorter studs I could rob from the perished top mounts. I got creative and "pressed" them into the mounts on the car and got it all bolted back up. The right side was done in about 1/3 the time since I didn't bother undoing the sway bar link and I knew the key to success.

Obviously, when the car comes off the jack, it looks even higher than it did before, so it was necessary to go for a drive.

It makes a bigger difference than I thought. Should look pretty sharp with the wheels I'm having refinished right now even on the stock suspension.

Uhhh, wasn't expecting an update on this so soon.

I got a call at 8:15 am that my wheels were ready. I grabbed some tires from the garage, drove over and was back home by 11am. I did a bunch of work and ran a bunch of errands and had the centers painted by 3pm. The wheels were installed on the car by 6pm and photos by 7.

Laughing

The wheels are genuine open-lug Alpinas. I used the stainless steel center caps with the roundels from the stock 14x6 wheels. I really like how that looks on this car. One angle I never got a shot of was across a parking lot. It looks like a totally different car.

Classy as hell!

Love bright E12s.

So what's going to happen to Andre's E28?
