Post subject: no power to fuel pump or gauge

Hello! I've got a '91 325i and yesterday on the way home I noticed that my gas gauge needle dropped from about 1/4 to way below empty, so when I got home I removed the trap door under the back seat to check the connection to the sending unit, which was fine. Next I swapped out #10 fuse, still no gas gauge, and now it won't start. It's getting spark, but no fuel. I pulled the fuel pump out and jumped it to the battery and it works fine. Put it back in, no start. Pulled the fuel pump relay and cleaned the points, still no start. Does anyone know why the gas gauge and fuel pump would both loose power at the same time, and what to try next? THANKS!

Have you tried jumping the relay and disconnecting the fuel line into a jug and see if it works?

Thanks for the reply. No, how do I jump the relay? Also, can I run some wires from the battery to the fuel pump and crank it over just to see if it starts?

Take some wire and find pins 87 & 30 on the relay and then insert them in there. Take the fuel line off and put into a bottle or something so it doesn't spill out. Then if it starts pumping you should have your answer

May be a dumb test but if you have that old fuse put it back in and see if runs again. It ran before you took that out. Seems weird tho since I'm sure you replaced it lol

Yeah, this whole thing is kinda weird, especially on Halloween. Maybe there's a ghost in my fuel tank or something. Do you happen to know whether jumping the relay will send power to the level sensor too? I took it apart to see if one of those tiny wires that the float runs on was broke, but it was fine. If I jump the relay and get gas, should it start and can I drive it jumped? Thanks again for the help...

Also, take your cluster out and check the connections on the back going to the fuel gauge.

Well, I was afraid someone was going to suggest removing the cluster, but I'll do it, it's better than running out of gas all the time.
Meanwhile, I jumped the fuel pump relay and got no gas and no power to fuse #11. If I manually activate the middle relay I can hear clicking noises by the fuel rail and down by the air filter, but no power to fuse 11. This seems to indicate that the fuse box may be the culprit, another task I'm not looking forward to.
I was wondering if I could run a jumper from the relay to #11 fuse just to get it running, or would that cause problems?
By the way, bastard, I noticed your ID picture - are you a pilot? I flew a Weedhopper for a couple years, had a great time and lived to tell about it.

yeah i used to fly sr-71's to resupply our lunar base with porno mags and blow. it was great to know that the blackbird was capable of space flight with no problem, and do it in half the time of the saturn V.

Well, I got it running. I ended up running a wire from the battery to the fuel pump which I'm sure some of you master mechanics will frown upon, but at least I'm back on the road, headed for a nice cruise up to Mt Lemmon. Thanks again for the help, and have a great weekend!
