Post subject: 15" vs. 17" wheels and tires for the track

Hi there!

I have a '93 325is set up solely for autocross and track time. I have been running 17" wheels and 255/40/17 tires, and especially at autocross, the car does not pull out of slow corners as well as I would like. If I go to a 15" wheel and a 225/45/15 tire, I would gain some low end because of the shorter combination, but lose a little tire width. Will be trying this soon, but wonder what your thoughts are. thanks!

Get on the gas earlier! haha

255s on a 17 is a lot of wheel and tire. I would test out the other combo. You can ask the guys on azsolo for their opinions too

I'd love to get on the gas earlier, but a lot of the A-X corners are REALLY slow. It's aggravating to bog.

The other (crazy) idea would be to put the 4.10 diff in it. Nah, that would be stupid. Razz

That would probably be your best bet, swapping the diff.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how fast you make it around the track. It matters if you get LAID that night.

A girl won't be impressed if you cut your 29 second lap time to 28.2 seconds. But that hoe will be impressed if you roll up on 17's instead of 15's.

17's!

Stunt on dem hoez!

Haha! Well, that's one perspective, I suppose.

In autocross, time matters, not size. Razz

I think the 15s would be better for that, and track/street better on 17s (or with the diff swap). Should have tried the sticky 15s when I had them/first got the car...

I think having more grip with the 255s would be the better option. That said, I know a guy who went to 225/45/15 for track tires with his E28 and was pretty happy. I run 255/40/17s on my touring, but I wouldn't dare autocross it since they would put me in some class with jet cars or something, so I stay home on Sundays now.

I am to the point where I don't CARE what stupid class they put me in. I just wanna go out and have fun with my car and destroy some tires. Cheap plastic trophies are around $10-15 if that is the reason to go, and a lot cheaper than a set of tires, shocks, springs, etc.

Agreed, the 255 wide grip is better, but 225-15s would be fun to slide around (maybe), and who knows, might even take the bounce-pad nicer?

Funny, I had a set of fairly new 225-15 RS-3s when I first got the car, and should have tried them out. Most people thought that was too small, so I searched out the 17s and sold the 15s. Hindsight bites.

you crazy! You could say screw STX, run XP or FP?, swap your M3 motor over or boost, Gut the thing, run 225/45/15 hankook r comps (which are cheap compared to others)

17s or bust.. .

I'm going with 245/40/17 on my M3 front and rear. I don't want to roll the fenders flat yet. to run 255s, you need to run the properly 17x9 wheel to take advantage of the size difference over the 245.

I want 17x9.5s but that will have to wait for when I decide to go all out track car.

Crazy? Me? Well duh! Laughing

I'll try STX this Fall Series and see how that is. If it's not "good enough," then it's time to move on! Crazy like a fox! Wink
