Post subject: e36 M3 steering rack

Been noticing a clunk in the front end lately, so I put it up in the air, and seems to be coming from the "steering gear" part of the rack, driver side, inside the boot. Haynes (shit) manual says it is not serviceable, and needs replacing. So, looking for a replacement. Is the M3 rack different than other e36s? Probably so, but thought I would ask, and if anyone has one. Thanks!

Make sure you take off the tierod covers and inspect the tie-rod joint where it meets the steering rack assembly. I had one customer who complained of clunking and said it was steering rack and I found on inspection that the inside tierod locking plate had not been installed allowing the tierod end bolt to start backing out of the steering rack assembly.

Ah, good point. That could very well be the case, as it is was "salvaged" for front end damage. I'll take a look, as that may have been swapped out to get it back and going again. The ends look good, and I have found some other loose things on the car. Thanks...

Could possibly be the joint between the column and the rack. www.ebay.com/itm/like/...7?lpid=82.

Try hitting it with pb blaster, mine had a slight clunk but after the pb blaster it was gone!

If you do replace the rack try and find one from a z3 1.9 it has a quicker ratio and bolts in.
