Post subject: New to BMW

Hello,
After a year of waiting I finally joined the BMW family with the help of a good friend (You may know him as Jaybee). Jaybee talked me into getting a BMW but which one was right for me. One thing you should know about me is I love the thrill of the hunt and none are better than searching for a new car. After hours of thought I decided on two things I could not live without, I wanted 5 speed manual and a convertible. This made it difficult since most convertibles that I saw on craigslist were automatics. I finally found a 98 328i convertible 5 speed at a local used car dealership. Although the price was right, the car had 150k miles and the interior was less than desirable. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the top was having issues and not working properly so back to the drawing board.

At this point, I was seriously starting to consider getting an automatic since 5 speeds seemed to be rare in a convertible. By chance I decided to check out cars.com because I had exhausted all leads within craigslist and that's when I found her. A 1997 328i 5 speed convertible with 78k miles!! I pulled the car fax and my reaction was this is too good to be true. I decided to round up the experts Jaybee (e30 Master Tuner and My Dad (does body work and paint) and head off to the dealership.

The car is in amazing shape body was beautiful but we noticed a rash under the passanger bumper. Interior is 9/10 easily with no tearing in the driver seat which is all too common in the sports seats. Popped the hood turned the key and let it warm to listen for anything mechanically wrong. BMW air filter suggest this car was babied for most of its life and spent time at the BMW dealership for its check up (good sign). When we tried the top the back lid would not pop and my heart sank. Luckily the gentleman agreed to have the top repaired as part of the deal. This may not seem like a big deal but every vert that I looked at had a broken top and was sold as is so it was cool the dealer agreed to have it working before I picked it up. After the inspection and a stressful week of waiting the car was finally done.

I have been driving it for less than a week and I have to say that I love this car. I have not finished a full tank of gas yet but I figure I am getting 27-30 mpg which I think is pretty good considering the 2.8 engine. I honestly don’t have too many plans to modify but I know I eventually will. Perhaps the M50 intake manifold mod I keep reading so much about. I have decided to go the meet in a couple of weeks so I can see what other people have done to their cars and perhaps get some tips on how to anticipate the quirks of the 3 series.
