Post subject: E38 what I have a got myself into..

I bought an E38 (2000 740i) few months ago. It had 3 CEL codes when I bought it. P0170,P0173,P1519. Ok now OUTSIDE of those about 3 weeks after I bought it. It would make a decent little cloud of bright white smoke on start up doesn't smell like coolant, doesn't smell like fuel smells like oil. Like I dumped a quart out on the driveway and lit it on fire. I've checked the oil its not milky or anything like that. Every time I do an oil change its normal dirty oil coloration. Keep in mind I bought the car pretty cheap and I knew it needed some love. Just how much is what I'm wondering now. ><

What I've replaced so far.

-OSV (plate on the back of the intake)

-Intake Mani gaskets

-Valve cover gaskets.( spark pluggs were swimming in oil Neutral )

This Smoking thing is mainly what I'm asking about here, I've read that simply replacing the OSV can clear that up. Its been replaced and still smokes if anything its a little bit worse than it was before, smoking for a bit longer on start up wanna say it clears up after about a solid 2 minutes now as before it'd only take like 15 ish seconds. I did notice when I took my intake mani off to do the gasskets there was oil pooled up over the Valves. =\ So I'm thinking now could it be Valve Guides? If you guys have any idea's post em up. I'm at a loss, but thats not saying alot really...

Valve guides sound like a possibility, but I don't know of that being a common M62 problem. The OSV/CCV/whatever you care to call it is the usual culprit, as you said. It (along with VC gaskets) solved my misfiring oil-bathed spark plug issues.

Without trying to sound like an ass - are you certain it was installed perfectly? It's a real PITA to keep the gaskets aligned properly back there when torquing it all down.

I'm trying to think of any other known issues but I'm drawing a blank as well.

Well the OSV was replaced when the intake mani was out of the car did the orange gasket thing as well I'm fairly certain I put it on properly but I can always re check pulling the intake off isn't too much trouble. AS far as the intake many gaskets they seemed to be good I suppose they all stayed on when I was putting it back the engine. Neutral

While the intake was off did you replace the rubber flex hose on the oil pipe going from the cyclone seperator to the rear cover? The cyclone seperator itself may need to be replaced. How many miles are on it?

If the smoke doesnt smell like anything I wouldnt worry,in the winter its normal for some smoke due to condensation in the exhaust. That year was already with vanos, might be an issue then, given the mileage.

The breather valve on the back of the intake manifold is the cause of smoke. While you have the manifold off replace the Bally pan to avoid doing this again later. And don't worry, just snip the a/c wire to avoid a hassle and reconnect with shielded spade connectors. Replace all parts that look suspect while you're there. The parts man at German Auto should be able to get you all that you need as we have done this job many times.

You could also try using M3/5 oil for the next change
