Post subject: e46 m3 is running hot

Hey guys my m3 is running really hot. The oil gauge is at 3/4 but the car runs fine. I took it to two different shops and they both told me that there is nothing wrong with it and when im in cali its normal. It only does in Az with this fucking heat. The car has 105,000 miles on it so im thinking of just replacing the radiator and the water pump to see if that helps.

Whats your guys opinion?

Leo, you said oil temp. Is it oil temp issues or coolant temp issues?

Its the oil temp gauge, the coolant temp gauge is right in the middle.

Check oil quantity and the oil filter, maybe the flow is slightly blocked. They do have an oil cooler right? Check if that gets warm with a laser thermometer. If your coolant temps are ok the radiator and water pump are fine.

I just had my oil changed at bo's. Idk wtf is going on especially since it runs perfectly normal in the cali weather.

To answer your basic question from the first post. Your radiator and water pump have nothing to do with oil temps.

I wonder if the oil cooler has a bunch of shit in the fins, or if it's dirty on the inside.

Get under there and look to see if you have shit blocking the oil cooler core.

When I would drive my e46 m3 in the heat like this my oil temp did rise almost as much as yours does, specially just sitting idle like at a stoplight or stop and go traffic. It would always go back to just over the middle line when moving so maybe your oil cooler duct might be blocked or something.

This. I experience the exact same thing throughout the summer.

mine never does that. It will get maybe past the "210" lettering, but it has never gotten close to the 3/4 way dot after that.

On the other hand, if I run the AC in weather like this, after maybe 10-20 mins I have to shut it off cause the water temp starts going up. My favorite was a couple years ago in 126 degree weather on I-10 just outside palm springs, it was bumper to bumper traffic for almost an hour, it was so hot the SMG clutch was even slipping away completely at times, later I had to replace the water pump.

So I finally got down there and cleaned out the my dirty oil cooler but still no results. It still runs hot. Im assuming its probably time to replace it and just wondering if anybody can recommend if I should go oem or aftermarket.
