Post subject: E39 M62 Fan Explosion

So I'm cruising innocently enough on the 202, ready to exit, and pop goes the clutch-driven (dumbass) radiator fan. I heard it start to overrev and immediately slammed the clutch to the floor to drop engine rpm (was around 2300), but it was too late.

It looks like a small shrapnel bomb went off in the engine bay; sliced a power steering line (3800 lbs on 255s with no power steering is fun), completely destroyed the fan shroud, completely destroyed the bottom half of the expansion tank and the line running to it, nearly severed an engine oil line, and left some pretty cute dents in the top of the hood, blowing the paint off in the process.

There were no warning signs before this - no abnormal locking up of the clutch, no strange noises, nothing at all.

Photos below.

So, be warned... and who wants to help out with the Spal conversion?

Shrapnel in the insulation.

Life blood on the floor.

Real sexy.

The only evidence the fan ever existed is this mayhem.

Motor mounts are due for a change.

Probably true as well, but it was under almost zero load when the clutch randomly decided to lock up. I don't think the engine would have moved enough for the fan to make contact with the shroud if I was at zero throttle position.

Same thing happened to me with a brand new fan and fan clutch on my e36. Luckily it only dented the hood...

Lucky, indeed. I'm surprised the blades flying around the engine bay at 8 million mph didn't shred more than they did in my case.

I'm pretty pissed there weren't more warning signs in advance, but oh well - things happen. Onto bigger and better fans.

my radiator fell back onto my fan and snapped 4 of my blades a few weeks back. im about to do a electrical conversion soon too. only busted the 3/8 return line up to the expansion tank. still driving with -4 blades till i find the right fan set up i want. good luck with the electrical shenanigans.

Bloody hell - like a cluster bomb.

My motor mounts are shot to hell. This motivates me to get them replaced.

lol this shouldnt be motivation to replace. this should be the reason you replace them now.. dont pay anyone to do mounts. it is easy as hell.

Wow, and I thought I was having a shitty day, LOL! So are you going to eliminate the engine driven fan entirely and just go electric? If so a SPAL is a good choice. Look for skewed ringblade fan. They make them in in different levels, depends on the wattage rating. Best of luck getting this repaired. Maybe the hood can be massaged a bit and paint touched up? Dach.

Spal is on the short list, I've got my eyes on a 16" that flows 2070 CFM. Yes I'm killing off the mechanical fan entirely because they're terrible to start with. Really should have done it earlier, but like I said: oh well.

@Nate:Yes! But mine's worse and doesn't have quite as good of a reason for being bent.

@tikid: Hood repair is low priority for now, but I appreciate the offer. I'll get in touch when I'm ready for that.
