Post subject: Check your E38/E39 mounts!

APPLIES TO ALL E38 7-SERIES AND E39 5-SERIES OR M60-M62 MOTORS

About 5-months ago when I had my 01' E38 740iL, I had a small power steering leak. I heard its terrible on rubber. I traced it down and saw it was on the mounts a bit. Around the same time I did a muffler delete and was hearing some weird grinding noises. So I did a test:

Start car > Put in Drive > DSC ON > Hold foot on Brake and Give it Gas.

** Watch the motor from seat, hood up. Or have someone watch the motor if you cant see it. If the mounts are going bad, it'll lift from driver side a bit. If the mounts were like mine, the motor will literally lift out and belt driven fan grind on fan shroud. Once I saw this, mounts were ordered. The thing is, the mounts were bad but I could not tell from driving, idle, or anything. Only gain was torque feeling after the mounts were put in. Heres a pic of what my mounts looked like:

That's exactly how my drivers mount looked when I replaced it Saturday morning...

Yup! And the funny thing is when I posted this on BimmerForums, over 10 owners had no idea their mounts were bad. I think at least half of them had the motor jump outta place.

That's how fans blow up in those cars.

I don't think/hope mine are that bad but I do need to replace them I know.

Wish I could have made it to that mod day this past saturday, I've got the new mounts, just lack the means/tools/knowledge to replace them atm.

Oh well, I've got bigger fish to fry atm, good info, thx

Yeah, had the same thing, where my fan "mysteriously" ate my upper coolant hose, twice.

Changing mounts on an e34 m60 is a bear, esp the driver's side, took 2 hours to do, the passenger side took 15 minutes.

Anyone know how long they usually last in the desert? I replaced mine 2 years ago and am wondering if they need to be done again.

our mounts are generally good and will last a while. they will go bad really fast if you have a power steering leak. that shit eats the mounts like nothing.
