I know there were quite a few of you that mentioned the windshield cowl that was cracking on their car. I just banged out mine in about 15 minutes and $60.
Here is the part:

I've seen this part on ECS for a long time and been meaning to replace it, but now I keep saying to myself "I'll do it when I replace my windshield"
I think for E36 it was $40ish, mine is so dry/chipped/cracked away I can see the bottom edge of the windshield. Actually it was the first thing I noticed after I got the car, mainly cause it's super faded too.
I'll have to bookmark this diy for when I finally do it, some year

My 2002 330ci was garaged the whole time sense it was bought new from dealer and that thing still dryed and cracked. I can't believe the poor quality of material on there E46 cars.

Actually that E36 M3 link is the parts for the sedan only. Here's the part for the coupe/convertible, it's all one piece.

This thread is old, but I thought I'd share my experience...
FYI, ECS is cheap but the shipping ends up costing more than the part. I think I also looked at Turner Motorsports and found the same story. I bought the piece from Chapman. They wanted ~$80 but I think I talked them down to ~$65 after dropping a name of my windshield guy who does work for them too. It was more than ECS (or list price on RealOEM), but cheaper when you factor in shipping.
Also, the DIY wasnt very tough. The hardest part was wiggling off the wiper arms, but that didnt take too long overall.

I finally did this back a few months ago, I ended up getting mine from BMA parts for $48, for a genuine BMW one

Thats odd... When I added to cart for the e46 sedan, base price was $53.55 and normal UPS ground shipping added $54.27 for at total of almost $108.
edit: Just saw that the e36 cowl on ECS is 3 piece, whereas e46 is a single piece. Mine was pretty big, which would explain the high shipping cost.
