Post subject: My S52 318iS

I've been in contact with this guy, and apart from a few small things (A/C needs to be sorted as well) I'm mostly wary of the exhaust:

M50 318iS

I guess I'll need to fit a cat in there somewhere to pass emissions in AZ, right? I've been thinking about getting a magnaflow 3" universal cat, and then getting it fitted somewhere, so a good exhaust shop recommendation would be welcome as well. Once I get the registration sorted I would, depending on how loud it still is, put a glass pack muffler in front of the main muffler, or is getting a whole new muffler a better idea?

Any general opinions or points to watch out for with this car are welcome as well of course.

Going to pick it up on Saturday. Does anybody have any experience with how much a magnaflow hi flow cat silences an exhaust? I'm not sure if I'll put in an extra muffler and the cat at the same time. Also any tips for exhaust shops are more than welcome.

Straight 6 + straight pipes = LOUD

Mines no cat with a 5" round magna muffler.. so basically straight!

Just a cat will make it slightly quieter than mine but not much I'd venture to guess. Smile I like it loud and it's a to/from the track only car unless I feel like terrorizing the neighborhood or the security at work! haha

Prob wont be to much. at the same time you put a cat on just put a resonator on there as well and you should be good.

Sounds like a good buy!!

I just got back with the car, quick pic from when I drove through Joshua Tree:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
The exhaust is not that loud so I'm not sure if I'm going to go for cat+resonator or just the cat. Except from that I need to do some cluster repairs (got a spare with the car) and the top of the drivers side door doesnt close enough. Can I adjust the hinges somewhere for that? It doesnt make contact with the rubber from the window up, so it gets pretty loud on the freeway.

I just swapped the cluster out and no dice. Still only speed and warning lights, no rpm, fuel, temp or mpg. If its not the cluster, is there another thing that can make all these things fail? Grounding maybe? I checked the fuses, and the temp and fuel have a nut on the back, so I'm out of easy things to check.

Did the PO do the swap correctly?

The new 24v harness needs to connect back to the C101, in there are the CLT, RPM, and warning lights.

Yeah he said it always worked, and he gave the spare cluster because the originals odo stopped (which I don't care about). I never heard anything about these problems in the messages I sent up until now, and he was very upfront about the other issues. I'll check the connectors after the game.

cluster fixed, it was a bad contact on fuse number 10. I'm gonna go to Bo's in Tempe to see about a cat to put in tomorrow. It rules over 9000 times more with all the meters working.

Post subject: Re: Now my M50 318iS (and emissions and a few other things)

one more problem now... There is a problem with the unloader circuit from the starter. before I start the engine there is no problem, but when I start it and after I have no power to the windows, blowers, A/C, etc... If I remove fuse 10 I lose the temp and fuel gauges but gain the blowers and everything else weirdly. Can I access the starter best by removing the manifold? I think grounding the unloader wire would solve the problem (disabling the unloader circuit) I'm not really looking forward to removing the whole manifold so any other ideas are welcome.
