Hi,

Can I slap US spec tires on my dad's '84 745i grey market BMW? Right now it has very worn out michelin TRX 220/55/390, not shelling out the outragous price on new ones of those ,even if they still make them.

Would he need to replace the wheels if he wants to run 215/60/14's for example? Thanks

I would say you would totally fine running what ever tires you would want. People run euro weaves and never have to run euro tires. I think you should be good but I dont own any euro stuff so wouldnt really know just going off what i think

Euro weaves did not run the expensive TRX tires, My experience is NO, but it wouldn't hurt call discount tire and hear what they have to say.

The trx tires was Michelin's attempt at trying to make a new way of tire measuring.

we used to order the trx from discount tires, $300 a tire, special order. that measurment is metric i believe.

i found some yokohoma's for $70 a tire in 215/60/14, i hope they fit. the euro wheels are 14x6.5 i think.

Yes, he needs new wheels in order to run non-TRX tires like the 215/60R14's you mention. TRX wheels are not made in inch sizes, they're unique and require only TRX tires.

Well, stopped by discount tires, they said best bet is to upgrade wheels to 15 inch, because the tires at 14 inch are not good enough to maintain the car weight and will wear out fast, not safe enough.

I would need 15 inch wheels 89-92 circa to run 205/60/r15 as per discount's info.

Anybody has 15 inch wheels to sell cheap or donate Rolling Eyes ?

If tires designed over 20 years ago could hold a 7 series fine I dont see why modern technology couldnt...

Sounds like you need some bigger Style 5s.... too bad these are already gone

I don't know if technology has advanced so much i the last 20 yrs, but skimping on good old rubber compound has. Not that I am too knowledgeable on tires and compound. But there has been more tire recall in the last decade or so if my memory recollects correctly.

The discount guys told me if i run 205/60/14 the outer edges on the tire will wear out faster due to not enough material, choice of tires with T rating, or weight of car if i remember correctly, thus upgrading the wheels will provide more choices in T rated tires.
