Post subject: Wanted: E46 Alarm Programming

I just ordered an OEM alarm and don't want to give a dealer my money to activate it.

Anyone here have the required software and willing do it for some dollars or beers this weekend? Or can recommend an independent shop who can?

Thanks, y'all.

I didn't have to program mine when I put it in. I just installed it and ......well, done. What needs to be programmed on it?

From my research (which could be incorrect), sometimes it works by just plugging it in and sometimes it doesn't. Evidently the car doesn't try to activate the alarm unless it's told that the alarm is there.

One example from Bimmerfest, but there are others around the interwebs: www.bimmerfest.com/for...ostcount=8

I guess we'll see when it arrives later this week, but because I'm impatient I wanted to have a backup avenue if the stupid thing doesn't work right away. Maybe mine will just... work!

Edit: See page 8 here. I don't have all the equipment for that malarkey.

Is your car already pre-wired for alarm? The way this document sounds is that if you did a retrofit on a non-prewired car then it might be an issue. Do you have the trunk indicators stating that it is prewired for alarm?

Yes, and I visually confirmed that the connector for the motion sensor is there... but all US E46s came prewired for all available accessories, even if they weren't installed.

Anyway, we'll see if it works on Saturday. I hope you are correct!

Update:

Installed it all last night. It beeps and all seems well, except I can't get the alarm to go off and the clown nose is acting funky.

Clown nose is supposed to start blinking immediately after locking and it does not. Instead, it waits ~30 seconds then starts (I know the alarm isn't actually armed for this amount of time, but the clown nose is still supposed to flash). If you press lock twice in quick succession, it should light solid for 1 second then start blinking. It does not.

I tried the "lock with windows down, wait a minute, then move around inside" to test the motion sensors, and nada. I tried holding the hood sensor down while locking and waiting until the clown nose starts blinking (30 seconds or 1 minute or whatever) then releasing it, and it doesn't go off. Holding lock or trunk release on the remote for 3 seconds does nothing.

Methinks it still needs some kind of coding per that BMW install guide? Mr. Bullfrog, how does yours behave?

Thanks for the help.

Not sure on the issues you are having. I was able to just plug in and go without any problems. I'll check it out some more when I get back home this weekend.
