Hi,

I just picked up a '97 540i, doing general maintenance, what engine oil would you recommend, I read 0w-40 Mobile 1 synthetic is approved by BMW. The local Wally doesn't carry it, what are you guys using?

The last time I changed my oil I went to the dealership an bought the 5W-30, the price was comparable or even cheaper than buying Mobil 1 by the quart at any of the auto parts stores.

Other than that you could try mail order, usually you can get pretty good deals even after shipping.

I'm with hon2bmw, the dealer is usually on par or cheaper per quart. But if you want M1 0-40 euro blend, they have it at autozone. That's what I put in for my last change.

I stopped by a near by pep boys where i live looking to match Wally's price on the 0w-40 ($6.52/ quart) Mobil 1, 2 bux difference, wally is good for something i guess.

Salesman tells me on the clearance desk we have Castrol 0W-30 made in Germany, $2 per quart, its like gold for free, i snatched it Wink I wish they had more than the 8 quarts i found, enough for one oil change.

The 5W-30 at the stealership is 7.50/quart or something, not bad if other options are not available.

Thanks for the input guys.

I am sure I will have plenty of E39 related questions popping up more often.

I use Mobil-1 Syn 0W-40 and its great. Quiets the VANOS rattle. I use a little Lucas Oil Stabilizer too.

Heads up guys, NAPA has Valvoline synthetic oils for $5.99 a quart and Mobil 1 synthetic for $5.79 on sale for the rest of the month, I think you can't beat that, especially with petrol prices being artificially hiked Twisted Evil

Myself I run Castrol oil in all motors I care about. For the E39 I run anything with BMW long life rating of 01+. So far I have only done one oil change on mine as I have only had it 3 months or so. Either way I think I am running 5w30 syntec.

How's the Slick working out for you? I have heard nothing but horror stories from guys that did fuel or oil additives.

Any marked benefits from the Slick 50?

Just so you guys know you can get Amsoil at wholesale for a pretty minimal cost and probably be cheaper than any of the full synthetics you guys are buying.

No benefits as far as i can tell. But my dad swears by the stuff. He had an old 60's era chevy that burned a quart of oil between fuel fillups. It would heat up whenever it ran low on oil. He added slick 50 and forgot to add oil at his next few gas-ups. When he finally realized his mistake, he checked the dipstick, it was dry. It never overheated, He never got a rod knock. That engine ran to 300,000 miles. And was still running when the buyer drove away in it. So, i guess it cant hurt.
